Job Summary:

Provide leadership and direction to Health and Safety department and ensure execution of policies & procedures, and program implementation in the areas of employee relations, training, ergonomics and machine safety.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline: Health and Safety, Human Resources, Ergonomics, Kinesiology and/or Engineering
  • 3 - 5 years of hands on experience in Manufacturing / Automotive preferred
  • JHSC Certification (Level 1 & Level 2)
  • Must have 3-5 years ISO14001 experience (auditing experience preferred)
  • Strong communicator in the English language, both written and oral
  • Excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Strong time management skills
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Powerpoint)
  • Ability to work independently and knowledge of best practices
  • Advanced knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
  • Knowledge of Employment Standards Act


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for all elements of the Health and Safety program, including but not limited to Safety policy creation/ maintenance, program role out, training and communications as per HSMS audit standards
  • Health and Safety Representative, responsible for monitoring and reporting key performance indicators as per Martinrea Corporate guidelines; advise on any concerns to Senior Management
  • Employee Advisor for Health and Safety issues and concerns. Assess concerns and coordinate with various departments for completion. Ensure follow up.
  • Ensure Health and Safety plant training requirements are fulfilled annually
  • Ensure completion and effectiveness of JHSC related programs, workplace inspections and Co-chair and Secretary for the JHSC meetings
  • Liaison with Engineering department to put forth proactive H&S initiatives related to process and machine buy off standards as per Martinrea expectations
  • Liaison with Maintenance department to put forth and monitor H & S maintenance orders
  • Management Advisor for the application of Health and Safety legislation in relation to incident investigation, potential outcomes of investigation, and corporate reporting
  • Perform hazard and ergonomics assessments of workplace, coach management and provide feedback to Senior Management
  • Lead the ESRTW program by acting as Case Manager; oversee ergonomic initiatives and ensure utilization of assessment tools to ensure suitable, productive work provided 
  • Document Control for Health & Safety Systems
  • Provide mentorship and training to Health and Safety team
  • Liaison with Human Resources department on inter-related departmental issues related to the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Abide by all company polices including, but not limited to the following; Health and safety, Human resources policies, and Martinrea Employee Handbook
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards and legislation including Environmental Legislation, O. Reg 851 for Industrial Establishments, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (with emphasis on Section 28, (1) (a)-(d), (2) (a)-(c))
  • Assist employees with concerns and answer questions on the Martinrea Employee Handbook and other HR related questions.
  • Abide by all Company polices including, but not limited to the following: Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental Systems, Human Resources policies, and the Martinrea Employee Handbook


Work Environment:

  • 40% Office environment, 60% Plant floor (PPE required)



  • Changes to Safety processes, procedures, forms and polices

  • Improvements of communication to plant floor employees and Supervisors/ Managers regarding Health and Safety initiatives
  • Action items from inspections or audits
  • Decisions and requests that require money


Physical Demands:

  • Employee is required to talk and intensively listen on a regular basis
  • Must be able to lift up to 35lbs.
  • Must be able to work with push pull forces of up to 50lbs. or less


Health and Safety:

  • Must work in accordance with Health and Safety regulations, Company and plant rules, policies and procedures
  • Must use or wear Personal Protective Equipment and certain clothing as required by the Company
