We are currently looking for a Weld Specialist to join our team on contract basis for six months with a possibility for extension in the future.

Job Summary: The goal is to produce the most capable welding process that is without expulsion in spot welding and minimal spatter ejection in MIG welding. Learning the fundamentals and sciences to aid in the construction of the parameter and specifications, you will be able to resolve any daily quality issues during daily production.

Knowledge and Skills (Education):

  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Post Secondary Education:
  • Electro-Mechanical Technician Diploma preferred * 5 7 years experience in similar role
  • Understanding of the fundamentals in Spot, MIG, projection, and drawn arc welding
  • Vast destruct and cut and etch experience to test your own adjustments
  • Ability to work independently and draw from experience with minimal supervision
  • Ability to problem solve where issues vary considerably
  • Knowledge of technical specialties and capable of working with moderately complex procedures; electrical trouble shooting of low voltage (120 V), spot and MIG welding, PLC programming (Allen Bradley processors required, OMRON an asset)

Major Accountabilities:

  • Trouble shoot equipment consisting of weld controllers, robotics and programmable logic controllers
  • Setting up proper tip dressing functions that employs skimming methodologies throughout the whole plant for spot welding.*
  • Application of different waveform, or introduction of new ones to enhance the welding arc characteristics so that it produces the most stable process.* *
  • Advise on new technologies or welding platforms that can be justifies to improve the process.*
  • Modify robot, PLC programs, and machine screen interfaces (HMI's) as required to adjust welding processes
  • Preventative maintenance and repairs as required
  • Ensure machines produce quality parts by maintaining welding equipment
  • Change welding consumables such as electrodes, caps and MIG weld tips and nozzles as needed
  • Ensure robot and PLC programs are modified in a manner that maintains or improves part quality (electrode life counters etc...)
  • Trouble shoot and repair welding equipment components which cause down time in a timely fashion
  • Adjust MIG and spot welding schedules on Medar, Lincoln, Miller and Panasonic weld controllers
  • Assist with the Engineering department in delivering and designing weld processes for new cells, as well as assisting with any on-going Engineering changes from the customer.

  • Adjust welding with a controlled quality procedure, primarily often doing your own checks with manually destructing your own parts and procedures such as batch hold and release
  • Abide by all company polices including, but not limited to the following; Health and safety, Quality and Environmental Systems, Human resources policies, and Martinrea Employee Handbook
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards and legislation including Environmental Legislation, O. Reg 851 for Industrial Establishments, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (with emphasis on Section 28, (1) (a)-(d), (2) (a)-(c)).

Working Conditions:

  • 100% plant floor (PPE required)
  • Frequent requirement of handling heavy equipment (operation)
  • Frequent need to give concentrated attention to surroundings

  • Indirectly reports to Welding Supervisor

  • Changing a welding or assembly process part or work instruction for better part quality or cycle time improvement
  • Tip change frequency
  • Improvements for production output
  • Quantitative Measurables:
  • 40 automated cells and stations
  • 30/ 40 calls per day
